Drop-in Faculty Writing hours for fall 2026 are Mondays from 12-3pm. If you have a writing group of three or more faculty members who would like to reserve additional time in the space, write to Chris Barrett (cbarrett@lsu.edu).
The HSSHC Book Institute assists faculty in book-based disciplines at every stage of the writing process, from formulating and completing the manuscript to publishing the book. Formerly the Second Book Institute, the Book Institute has expanded to offer faculty support in their monograph writing at every career stage. The Book Institute helps faculty overcome writing obstacles, finish manuscripts, and navigate book publication. Book Institute fellows receive detailed feedback on their work in progress, peer mentorship, and guidance from editors at university presses. Throughout the year, the HSSHC hosts events that demystify the process of writing and publishing monographs. From formulating a scholarly book’s argument to crafting a compelling book proposal to discerning which publishers to approach, HSSHC events help faculty advance their research into the publication pipeline.Click here for the full listing of HSSHC events this term.
This initiative offers partial funding for symposia connected to books in progress, for which HSS scholars are authors, editors, translators, or key creators. Supported symposia should assist LSU scholars in accelerating the development, publication, and/or dissemination of their work, and in advancing their professional success. If you are an HSS scholar seeking support for such a symposium, write to hsshumanitiescenter@lsu.edu and describe (1) the book project, (2) the current status of the project and its timeline for development, publication, and/or dissemination, (3) the symposium you are proposing and how it will advance this project, (4) how the project and symposium will contribute to your research or creative career, especially if the project aligns with your promotion and tenure itinerary, and (5) a preliminary sketch of the symposium invitees and costs. The HSSHC advisory board will review applications three times each academic year: on August 15, on January 15, and on April 15.
